Le Palais is, by a long way, the prettiest place we’ve visited. The town sits on the opposite side of a canal, under a massive citadel. It was built by the French in the 18th century, to defend the island. Within two years of its completion, the English captured it. We then sold it back to the French in return for Nova Scotia!

We rafted against another boat in the basin. Further along there were boats rafted 3 on each side of the canal with a small gap in between. There were three Capitainaires in dinghy’s who helped with the boat manoeuvres, as otherwise it would’ve been pure chaos.

We were away at 06:30, so not the best nights sleep, especially as the bar played French disco until midnight.

We had winds variable Force 4 to 6 then down to 1!

Isle D’yeu is different from the Breton coast. Gone is the slate tile over whitewashed walls and in is the Mediterranean clay tiles.

Tomorrow, an early start for our journey to LaRochelle. We have a dinner reservation at Andres for 9pm. Mouclade, curried moules is the order of the day. Not sure if we can persuade Andy of that!
